"Late Renoir" --Philadelphia Museum


"The Bathers," the panoramic painting that Renoir finished the year he died, ends the Philadelphia show.

"In this woozy image of two mammoth pink nudes reclining in a pastoral landscape, Matisse saw “one of the most beautiful pictures ever painted.

"I can guess what Mary Cassatt would have seen: cellulite and sunburn. I’m inclined to see two croissants on a plate of greens, and leave it at that."
