The unbelievabe Lorraine Hunt Lieberson(1954-2006)in a scene from Peter Sellar's production of Handel's "Theodora". Can there be anything more heart-breakingly beautiful?
Handel: As with Rosy Steps the Morn
Ah! Whither should we fly, or fly from whom?
The Lord is still the same, today, for ever,
And his protection here, and everywhere.
Still shall thy servants wait on Thee, O Lord,
And in thy saving mercy put their trust.
As with rosy steps the morn,
Advancing, drives the shades of night,
So from virtuous toil well-borne,
Raise Thou our hopes of endless light.
Triumphant saviour, Lord of day,
Thou art the life, the light, the way!
As with rosy steps. . . da capo
Thanks to Stan for reminding what a loss her death was, but also what a gift her voice was and is.
The DVD of "Theodora" is wonderful. The Sellars production sets this story of the Roman persecution of early Christians into modern times. The production is worth it for the opening aria potrayed as a modern day political news conference. Dead on!
