A couple months after acquiring my laptop, “Evelyn”, I began to look for ways to record my music. I didn’t want a huge “be your own band” studio. I just wanted Evelyn to record what me and a few musicians played.
While thinking all this over, my Tech pal, Mark, told me that I could record short “messages” on Evelyn. And sure enough, there was a device that gave you 60 seconds to record; 75 seconds if you compressed the tracks. Impatient, I started recording short piano improvisations. Amazed at how much time 60 or 75 seconds was, I explored it like new property. I ignored the watch and tried to sense where I was…37 seconds? 50? 68? How much time to work with? How to make use of all this time?
We later found a simple program which met my needs, with longer capacity, and I was back to writing unbordered music. It would still be great to revisit 60 or 75 seconds, but without Mother Necessity, I haven’t gotten back to invention.
[Note: reading the above should have taken you between 60 and 75 seconds.]
