Messiaen: "Joy of the Blood of the Stars" (1948)

Some of the most exciting music I've heard!

This is V. of the ten-movement,75 minute "Turangalia" Symphony by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992.) The ecstasy of the music and the huge forces required to perform it, the inventiveness and the playfulness! All this to describe that point where human, erotic love and divine love meet and merge! The more you listen to Messiaen's music, the more it opens up to you.
This is the music that changed my mind about a lot of things, and made me want to be a musician all over again. Listen. and Listen again!!
And yes, that's the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Messiaen:"First Communion of the Virgin" (1944)

Messiaen did not need a huge orchestra; he produced so much sound, so many layers of colors and rhythms on just the piano. This piece, part of "20 Reflections on the Infant Jesus", paints the picture of when Blessed Mary first received Jesus in her womb--her "First Communion." You will hear birdsong and "cloudchords" and the "theme of God" and even the baby's heartbeat (occurring with about 2:26 to go.)His whole musical output was colored by his profound Roman Catholic mysticism and his unique
style of music composition.
