Edition and Subtraction

This morning, I got up to a stunning sunrise. I went to my desk and looked at what I was working on and said to myself, “Whatta pile of crap!!” ----ever happened to you?
Call it spring cleaning, or pruning, or the desire for order out of chaos. For me, I’ve hit the point where self-criticism is overwhelming. I tossed a bunch of music sketches away because, as we in Chicago like to say about the “TRIBUNE”, I don’t eat that much fish.

And so with this blog. I’ve already begun to delete posts that don’t seem very fresh anymore. Sometimes they’re dated (not often though, since I don’t really comment on the daily news ----By the way, did I miss the parade in Baghdad, with children with flowers, celebrating 4 years of liberation?)

I haven’t erased anything because I’ve changed my mind and don’t feel that way anymore. “What I have written, I have written.” I have also resisted the urge to rewrite or add on to a posting. But some things seem trite. (I have actually deleted an entire “secret blog” of mine. I just didn’t have anywhere to go with it.)And I'm in the process of moving some of my sound-bites to my MUSIC BLOG.

Just as I can be as self-indulgent as any artist, I can also be as ruthless as any editor when it comes to my own stuff.
I did not compose anything for 7 years because I kept editing an idea before it had a chance to become something. ( I almost edited myself right out of existence with my heavy drinking. It’s a good place to hide, just not for very long.)

This process gives me an “Avenging Angel Evicting the Fallen from Eden” kind of feeling. And besides it gives me more room for new postings like the following…
