I have this thing about windows and doors...This is a favorite of mine. It is like Bonnard choreographed this painting so that my eye follows a directed path. First, my eye goes directly out the window to that deep, rich blue sky---the blue you see in the background of renaissance paintings---then over to the lush greenery (two or three different shades)then to the wood frame of the window. I notice the curtains contrasting with that incredible blue (out the window I go again!)Down to the floor where there's a vase with some kind of sickly looking plant, over on the other side to the cat, peeking at us, barely interested, as all cats are, and then WHAT'S THIS? In the very corner is Marthe, the painter's wife and troubled muse, dozing in a chair.(It is as if he had to place her in the painting somehow.) I compare the lavender of the chair with the sky, and it's out the window and back in and around again. Every time I look at this painting, my eye follows the same route. Merci, Pierre.
